Mission
Statement
deep-seated conviction: contemporary African artists' commitment to development projects is one of the best ways to secure a better future for the continent
Objectives
AAD projects aim to generate sustainable economic and societal development, well-being, better living and changes in mentality by playing more on leverage effects than on the volume of committed budgets. AAD provides the necessary impetus and provides funding for the maturation and consolidation of development projects and artistic initiatives linked to them, but still refuses any approach limited to simple assistantship. AAL projects are short/medium term; it is a question of catalysing actions, not of operating them as such.

Apple Hill Foundation Playing for Peace

music education
United States
Mission
Statement
'Playing for Peace, our philosophy of inclusion that brings together students and faculty from around the world to play chamber music at Apple Hill. Playing for Peace was founded in 1988 to assemble musicians from areas in political conflict to play chamber music together. Over the span of 30 years, the program has grown to include many other communities, including those who are underrepresented in classical music, separated by racial or ethnic discord, or by differences of gender, orientation, ideology, religion, age, or playing level.
Objectives
Activities
The students work together and are coached daily in pre-assigned small ensembles, without a conductor, using the five skills of chamber music: watching, listening, being sensitive, flexible, and then adapting—the same skills they will need in their daily lives once they return to their home communities. Students also share meals, indoor and outdoor chores, and socialize together, forming meaningful friendships that enhance their growth. It takes courage for these students to open themselves to playing and working together musically and socially, and they come to trust, take risks, and connect with each other in ways that transcend boundaries they may encounter back home.

Palestine
Mission
Statement
We aim to promote creativity and commitment for change through a novel combination of specific training and acting programs and services and professional theatre performances. If marginalized audience is unable to come to our main location in Ramallah, we move our stage to these often remote areas to include everyone.
Objectives
Activities
At ASHTAR we offer intensive theatre training programs for local students throughout the year, often resulting in performances on stage, but also equipping young Palestinians with essential skills that go beyond acting. Apart from an increased level of self-awareness and confidence, additional qualifications resulting from our training methodology are leadership, communication, and team work skills. Our Master Classes attract theatre professionals and students from any continent, transforming Ashtar in a truly global space over the summer months every year. During this period international and local students work directly with theatre professionals and have the opportunity to engage in intensive training and cultural exchange, while learning about Palestine at the same time. One of ASHTAR's pioneering specialties is a highly successful genre known as Forum Theatre. The purpose of Forum Theatre is to promote a more active dialogue and commitment for change within the society. This theatre form engages the audience to interact on stage with essential social and political issues, transforming a commonly passive audience into pro-active and involved participants. In essence, Forum Theatre is a vital and engaging democracy-building tool. Through the use of the integrated methods of Forum Theatre, ASHTAR stands as an agent of change in Palestine.

India
Mission
Statement
Dosti, which means friendship in both Urdu and Hindi, seeks to transcend political and cultural barriers through cross-cultural musical collaboration.
Objectives
The Dosti Music Project brought together a group of musicians from Pakistan, India, and the U.S. for a month-long residency and tour in 2015 and 2016. An initiative of the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan, produced by Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation, Dosti invited a group of Pakistani, Indian, and U.S. musicians from a wide variety of traditions, ranging from Sufi singing to beatmaking to avant garde jazz, to collaboratively write, record, and perform original music, reinvent traditional music, and develop impactful initiatives aimed at local and international communities.
Activities
Through the process of sharing, listening, and collaborating, the Dosti musicians model creative, cooperative, and egalitarian cultural exchange between India, Pakistan, and the United States – providing a positive template for cross-national discourse and people-to-people diplomacy. By providing musicians from India and Pakistan the infrastructure for collaboration and integration, Dosti creates a unique opportunity to reconnect musical traditions and re-link the politically fractured South Asian subcontinent. By facilitating the project in the U.S. and including American musicians, the U.S. participates as capacity-builders and as equal partners, establishing a model of cultural interaction that can positively impact diplomatic and political discourses.

Canada
Mission
Statement
Its aim is to bridge the constructed cultural divides that appear to separate people from each other, and to exhibit such bridges, all through socialized sound in live musical performance.
Objectives
Activities
The ETO demonstrates these pan-human linkages musically, in two ways: (1) socially, in the group itself, which is diverse, in backgrounds, languages, ages; crossing boundaries of all sorts - including university students, staff, and faculty as well as members of the broader Edmonton community, and (2) musically, by highlighting the flow of music through people, via non-stop boundaryless performances, linking diverse regions and societies around the world through continuous sheets of sound. Socially, we aim to represent our community, drawing membership from every corner, in all its diversity, transcending rather than reinforcing boundaries in our performances. Musically, we focus on the idea that music crosses putative boundaries, just like we do, and erases them in the process - we look for melodies and sounds that have traveled, and invent new ones that will travel in the future. The ETO is committed to representing and creating connections above and beyond perceptions of individual, discrete cultures, imagined to be separable, countable bubbles. Rather, in our view, culture is individual - we're all culturally unique, just as we're genetically unique, and we each view culture from a unique perspective... at the same time the phenomenon of culture is pan-human, connecting us all. It is impossible to separate one culture from another... cultures are not internally homogeneous, because too much is shared, and all is in motion. We transcend culture considered as a countable noun to reveal -- and help create-- a more general cultural flow, through sound.

Egypt
Mission
Statement
pioneers social change through the arts
Objectives
For society as a whole to value the role of traditional musicians in the wider community, an expanded field of play and larger, more diverse audiences are required. There is a critical need to mentor and prepare traditional musicians for live performance in diverse contexts that demonstrate their importance to the larger cultural arena. We aim to expand the performance program in our new space, El Tanbura Hall with an educational program of lecture/demonstrations and documentary films to educate the public and to overcome local perception of traditional musicians as irrelevant to the ambitions of a modern nation-state, as well as to demonstrate their value as an artistic resource to contemporary artists.
Activities
Performances: Located in downtown Cairo (see Contacts for address), El Mastaba presents four regular weekly concerts: a weekly performance in Cairo at El Dammah Theater for Free Arts brings performances by the 11 bands of the El Mastaba Network (for detailed information about the bands El Mastaba supports, click here) with a focus on the simsimia and damma traditions from Port Said and the Suez Canal region in general, the music of Rango, originating from Sudanese and Egyptian Zar rituals and the Bedouin music from the Sinai. Three performances of the bands, El Tanbura, El Hinna and El Waziry take place weekly in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez, respectively. See Videos for a list of El Mastaba performances on the Web. Schools: El Mastaba has founded and maintains three schools, one in Port Said, a second in Suez and the third, just established (2012), in El Arish for teaching children their musical heritage. 15 students in each school range from the age of 6 to 16 years old and are taught to play the popular instruments and rhythms, and also to learn and keep and perform the popular songs and dances. The Center also fosters balanced growth by combining art and knowledge as it monitors and encourages the general educational development of the students, promoting the value of education to their future. The students also gain experience as performers: they have performed in more than 15 concerts in the Canal Zone and in Cairo. These performances have attracted diverse audiences which includes a number of street children. El Mastaba has brought these students together in three bands (see LINK to Bands), produced a CD of their work and found them opportunities to perform for audiences. Archive: The Center houses and maintains an archive of over 700 hours of audio-visual material, including recorded interviews, performances and films. A catalogue of the archive materials is available in Arabic and we have plans to translate it to English and put it online. Production: El Mastaba also produces Cds, DVDs, as well as films and promotional material for the bands. For a list of El Mastaba productions and how to purchase them, see Videos.

How it works: We accumulate direct donations, fundraise through the sale of cultural products from our travels, and devote a percentage of all Jâca merchandise to the JCEP fund. Each year, we spotlight an underprivileged musical community in need of financial support and work with them to determine the best way to disperse these funds. Mission
Statement
'Notes for Notes® (N4N®) was founded in Santa Barbara, CA in 2006 as an answer to the lack of contemporary musical equipment and programs in public schools in order to provide youth with music and production instruction that produces both positive social-emotional and creative growth. Inspired by their time as Bigs in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program the Founders were focused on creating an environment with zero barriers to entry. Youth could have access to top of the line instruments, gear and Producers that would always be there to help them realize that talent inside themselves, all for FREE.
Objectives
Activities
Today, N4N provides access to high quality, recording studio environments, but more importantly, access to positive and encouraging relationships to over 8,500 youth in 23 studios across 11 states/14 cities. Located inside Boys & Girls Clubs/ youth facilities (and soon public schools) N4N Studios are gateways to exploring music, careers in the industry and producing original music that empowers young musicians to realize their identity.

Mission
Statement
The goals of the Oakdale Community Choir are to provide choral singing experiences for men (inside singers) in the general population of the Iowa Medical and Classification Center (Oakdale Prison) who are not restricted to their units and for women and men (outside singers) in the community who have an interest in learning more about issues in the prison system locally and across the state and nation.
Objectives
Activities
Together we have formed a "Community of Caring" that we look to expand in new and creative ways. We have many collaborative aspects of the program such as reflective writing exchanges (see "Newsletters" for excerpts of the writing since we began in 2009), its mutual benefit for both inside and outside singers, the partnership between the University of Iowa and IMCC, our connections with the Iowa Department of Corrections Victim Services and Restorative Justice Programs, and associations with community organizations through our concerts. At the culmination of the season, the choir performs two themed concerts in the prison gym. One concert is for people incarcerated at IMCC, a second concert is for approved guests. We audio record the second concert and distribute these CDs to approved family members or friends of the inside singers.

Mission
Statement
OneBeat is the gathering place for the musical leaders of the 21st century. Launched in 2012, OneBeat began as an annual U.S-based residency and tour program that brings early-career musicians together from around the globe to collaboratively write, produce and perform original music, and develop strategies for arts-based civic and social engagement. Since then, OneBeat has grown into a constellation of programs in production around the globe.
Objectives
OneBeat endeavors to be the nexus of a new way of thinking about how music and artistic expression can help us collectively build healthier communities, prosperous societies, and a more peaceful world.
Activities
OneBeat brings musicians (ages 19-35) from around the world to a region of the U.S. for one month each Spring and Fall to collaboratively write, produce, and perform original music, and develop strategies for arts-based social engagement. OneBeat begins with an opening residency, when Fellows collaborate to create original material, record new musical ideas, and incubate their projects. OneBeat Fellows then go on tour across a region of the U.S., performing for a wide array of American audiences, collaborating with local musicians, and leading workshops with youth and community organizations. During the month, each OneBeat musician also sets out their plans for the future, further developing projects in their home countries that embody the OneBeat mission of collaboration and engagement.
