I am passionate about using music in ways that bring people together to create common ground and understanding. Music has powerful capabilities to increase empathy and work together.
I started an interdisciplinary undergraduate major in Music and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University (home of the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding). I also collaborate with many groups around the university, community, and world to bring these theories and practices to life for our students. I am always looking for people to brainstorm, make music, and help expand and amplify this field.

With a strong interest and practice in peacebuilding, meditation, yoga, group singing, and improvisation, I am a Professor of Music Education at the University of Iowa. I research music-making and well-being, songwriting, and collaborative communities and am lead author of Music-Making in U.S. Prisons: Listening to Incarcerated Voices (2022) with Stuart Duncan. As co-founder and facilitator of the International Music and Justice Network: IMAJIN Caring Communities, a group of researchers from 14 countries who meet monthly and collaborate on projects, I am building connections among people across the globe focusing on music-making in prisons. From 2009 to 2020 I led the Oakdale Prison Community Choir and songwriting workshop where participants have written over 150 songs, and the Oakdale Choir has performed over 75 of these songs, available with the Creative Commons License. I have been a keynote for conferences in Germany, Canada, and Portugal, interviewed by the BBC3 Music Matters radio show, and has over 40 publications in journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings. I implemented ungrading in my college courses and am working on a collaborative autoethnography about grading contracts with four graduate students. I am creating songwriting partnerships between incarcerated and non-incarcerated songwriters. I have passion for drawing, painting, theatre arts and I'm using music to spread the message of a sustainable future and to empower the younger generation through learning and reviving of declining traditional music and instruments, as a result of violence/insurgency in North-Eastern Nigeria. I am starting a community music studio where children and youths can learn, record, and produce traditional/indigenous music. This would empower the younger generation and provide a space for their voices to be heard, alongside self-development.

Gillian Howell is a musician, researcher, educator and activist working at the nexus of participatory arts, community development, and education in its many forms. She's been gathering and connecting people through music with her community-engaged research and practice in Australia and around the world for over two decades. Voice and connection are the through-lines and connective tissue of all her work. As a performer, facilitator, composer, sound artist, and community cultural development practitioner she works with diverse communities to create musical ways of telling their stories, to connect with each other through shared music-making, and to explore new soundworlds and modes of expression. Gillian's collaborations span diverse contexts, including with remote Indigenous communities, in classrooms and community contexts with recently-arrived child migrants and refugees, and in post-war countries in the Balkans, the Caucasus, and Asia. She has transformed the community engagement programming of Australia's symphony orchestras and cutting-edge new music ensembles, and worked as a musician and workshop leader with development organisations within the structures of international development aid. She is committed to training and supporting the next generations of musicians and music educators to put their creativity and artistic skills to work in making a more just, equitable, and peaceful world.

As a peace builder I have been organising dialogue and reconciliation workshops in the North Caucasus. In this work my Chechen and Russian colleagues and I explore combining musical and verbal dialogues. This revolutionised our dialogue and reconciliation work. In particular, we stumble of how using music in this way can create conditions for collective ability transformation to unfold. I have researched and documented this work extensively in my PhD dissertation (Jordanger, 2021).
More recently, in my work as a guide/coach
I have been using music in archetype embodiment work with groups online. In this personal development work my colleagues and I have been combining guided meditations and music in a way that deepens the music experience and archetype discovery and embodiment processes.

I am a guide, facilitator, researcher and entrepreneur who have used music in various contexts in my professional work and roles since the beginning of this millennium. I have also organised music festivals in my local community for a number of years.
As a researcher I have documented how combining musical and verbal dialogues can allow for the unfolding of profound relational trust and transformation processes between parties in conflict (arguably much faster and deeper compared to more conventional verbally based approaches to dialogue).
Currently I'm exploring how music can be used in combination with nature-based practices in personal development and leadership development work more specifically. This could be referred to as peace building work focused on targeting structural and cultural violence, having to do with ways of being stemming from the dominant Western worldview. In this work I am among other things exploring the music tradition of the Sami people (indigenous people living in the Nordic countries and the north-west part of Russia), learning from eminent musicians who have Sami backgrounds.
I'm happy to share my knowledge and expertise about how to combine musical and verbal dialogues in a variety of settings, as well as how to combine music with nature-based practices in personal development and leadership work.

I am a music therapist and am currently working with children with special needs, autism, adhd, developmental disorders, and mental health issues in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Many of the children I work with are Maori (indigenous people of Aotearoa/New Zealand), so I am right at the source of cultural and political issues that are present in New Zealand today (colonialism, racism, economical differences, etc.). I am learning to understand how I can use music in a culturally sensitive way and also build bridges between the existing divides with the help of music.

I was born in Germany but raised in Rotorua in Aotearoa, New Zealand. I have always felt a strong connection to Aotearoa and its beautiful nature, culture, and especially people. Working for the Bay of Plenty as a music therapist has been her dream for many years. Music has always played an essential role in my life, and singing is one of my greatest passions. I hold a bachelor’s degree in primary school teaching with a major in music from the University of Education in Freiburg, Germany. In 2022 I obtained a master's in music therapy from the University of The Arts - ArtEZ, in The Netherlands. Throughout my life and studies, I have experienced the healing powers of music as a therapeutic treatment, and have learned to understand music’s importance for people’s wellbeing and happiness. I have worked with various groups of people such as children and grown-ups with special needs and applied music therapy in a psychiatric setting. I love seeing participants engage in, with, and through music which inspires me deeply, and I believe that music can help people grow and express themselves. Being the facilitator of such important and intimate processes is very special and important to me. My passion for music therapy and peacebuilding came about when I was studying. Through that I contacted Dr. Urbain and we have been in touch ever since. I think music can be a great tool to provide inner peace and peace among communities worldwide. I am fascinated by how music can influence people’s identity and culture and how music can help with establishing connections and overcoming differences. My master and bachelor thesis focused on the use of music therapy in the processes of peacebuilding. I interviewed various different experts within the field about their views on goals and approaches in the field of music and peacebuidling with a special focus on music therapy.

Notably, I served as the coordinator of the training component and pedagogic advisor for the National Music Plan for Living Together (PNMC) at the Ministry of Culture in Colombia, contributing to the implementation of musical policies and strengthening over 1,000 non-formal music schools for bands, choirs, orchestras, and popular and traditional music nationwide between 2010 and 2014.
As a founding member of "Sonido Colectivo," I actively contribute to a knowledge community fostering dialogue among individuals, agents, and institutions interested in comprehending the role and impact of music in social construction within the Colombian context.
Presently, I hold the position of a full-time music pedagogy professor at the University of Valle. Simultaneously, I am a doctoral researcher at Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London supported by the Social Impact of Music Making platform (SIMM). I was born in Belgium, studied in the US and the UK, and I've been living in Japan since 1991. I participated in the design and publication of one of the first collective books on the topic, entitled Music and Conflict Transformation: harmonies and dissonances in geopolitics (2008, 2015) published by I.B. Tauris (now Bloomsbury) as its editor. As an amateur pianist, when I play, I wonder about how to contribute to a better world, and as an educator, when I teach peace studies, I consider the application of music in peacebuilding activities. Besides teaching, nowadays I devote myself to the development of the MOMRI Hub as a space where new connections can emerge, between all kinds of people interested in the juxtaposition and merging of musical and peacebuilding activities.
