Gillian Howell is a musician, researcher, educator and activist working at the nexus of participatory arts, community development, and education in its many forms. She's been gathering and connecting people through music with her community-engaged research and practice in Australia and around the world for over two decades. Voice and connection are the through-lines and connective tissue of all her work. As a performer, facilitator, composer, sound artist, and community cultural development practitioner she works with diverse communities to create musical ways of telling their stories, to connect with each other through shared music-making, and to explore new soundworlds and modes of expression. Gillian's collaborations span diverse contexts, including with remote Indigenous communities, in classrooms and community contexts with recently-arrived child migrants and refugees, and in post-war countries in the Balkans, the Caucasus, and Asia. She has transformed the community engagement programming of Australia's symphony orchestras and cutting-edge new music ensembles, and worked as a musician and workshop leader with development organisations within the structures of international development aid. She is committed to training and supporting the next generations of musicians and music educators to put their creativity and artistic skills to work in making a more just, equitable, and peaceful world.
