I've researched music in places of detention for over fifteen years, with several publications on this topic including my monograph Dangerous Mediations, on pop music in a Philippine prison (2019) and the anthology Sound and Detention: Towards Critical Listening, Sonic Citizenship and Social Justice (2026). Most recently I lead the international project Prisons of Note: Mapping music and nuances in penal exceptionalism from the periphery (funded by the Norwegian Research Council, 2021-'26). (https://www.hf.uio.no/imv/english/research/projects/prisons-of-note/index.html) Some practice-based research outputs from this project (recordings, films, and more) will be installed in an upcoming public exhibition at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo in September-October 2026, and I am planning subsequent follow on initiatives and educational activities building on the intersection of music and peace-building. I'm also affiliated with an upcoming AHRC-funded project that will examine the role of music and culture in the lives of young people during the Troubles era. I would be delighted to connect with anyone working in this area to share resources, strengthen networks, and potentially collaborate on future projects. Available for: Project Collaboration, Research Consulting, Writing/Speaking, Strategic Planning, Digital Project Consulting, General network building, mentorship, and resource-sharing.
