MOMRI Affiliate Ai Nakatsuka presents at World Congress of Music Therapy

On July 8th, 2026, MOMRI Affiliate Ai Nakatsuka presented "Music Therapy and Peacebuilding: Exploring Collaborative Approaches in Conflict-Affected Areas" at the World Congress of Music Therapy in Bologna, Italy.

Drawing on her work as a music therapist in Sudan, and international studies frameworks prepared by Tomoyuki Nakatsuka, Ai made an argument for greater collaboration and research between the fields of music therapy and peacebuilding. Ai emphasized that there have been few studies which examine music-based psychological support, especially on the part of healthcare professionals. In particular, she highlighted recommendations for further studies on the role of music-based psychological interventions by healthcare professionals in 1) impacting trauma and mental health and 2) generating long-term effects on individuals and society.

Ai's presentation was well received by the international music therapy field, and MOMRI looks forward to encouraging studies which draw closer connections between music therapy and peacebuilding. She was also happy to see colleagues and make new connections, including with music therapists Sander van Goor and Dr. Carol Shultis (pictured). Congratulations, Ai!
